Honda unveils UNI-CUB mobility device [w/video]

Honda has unveiled its new UNI-CUB personal mobility device, designed to be used in public spaces alongside pedestrians.

The UNI-Cub is an evolution of the company's U3-X concept, revealed in 2009, and is designed to give users as much freedom as possible. This has been achieved through the world's first omni-directional driving wheel system – Honda Omni Traction Drive System – as well as balance control technology. The upshot is the ability to control speed, move in any direction, turn and stop, just by shifting weight in the desired direction in a simialr way to a Segway. Honda says its sit-on device is particularly adept at maneuvering through crowds. A touch panel can be used along with a smartphone as another way to control UNI-CUB.

The height of the saddle-style seat means the rider's feet can reach the ground when stopped while their heads are at the same height as other pedestrians.

From June until March 2013 Honda will be testing UNI-CUB along with staff from Japan's National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, with museum staff using the device to make their rounds.
